How to Fill a Butane Lighter

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy Step1
Bleed the lighter before filling it to allow for maximum filling by holding the lighter upright. On some lighters, you must depress the gas release button. On covered lighters, such as a Colibri lighter, opening the cap releases the gas. Once the hissing stops, all the air is expelled.
Step2
Fill the lighter only in a well-ventilated area. Never smoke while filling a lighter, or attempt to fill it, near an open flame.
Step3
Turn the lighter upside down to access the fill valve. You may need to remove the protective cap covering the fill valve on some lighters. Place the butane can's filler stem over the lighter's fill valve stem and press down firmly to open the lighter's valve and form a seal between the two stems.
Step4
Hold the can upside down firmly against the lighter for five or six seconds to transfer the butane from the pressurized can into the lighter. When the butane begins to spray out, the lighter is full. Remove the can from the lighter. Both the lighter and the can will be extremely cold.
Step5
Set the lighter down until it warms up to room temperature. The lighter won't light while the butane is cold. You can also hold the lighter in your hand to help it warm up more quickly.
Step6
Wipe your hands before attempting to light your lighter to remove any butane, which may have sprayed on your hands during filling. Replace the protective cap over the fill valve, if there is one. Once the lighter warms up to room temperature, it's ready to go.
